Allergies and Asthma

Allergies and asthma are interrelated, in that; both the disorders are aggravated by each other.

An allergic reaction results in constriction of the respiratory passages, resulting in tightening of the airways. Immunglobulin E (IgE) is produced by the immune system, as a result of an allergy. Research reveals the improvement in asthmatic condition, once treated for allergy. Asthma is a condition characterized by a responsive reaction by the trachea and bronchi to a stimulant that results in the constriction of the airways. Typical asthma symptoms are breathlessness, fatigue and wheezing.

Immunotherapy aids in desensitization, thereby enhancing the state of asthma.

Decreased exposure of oneself to allergic substances or allergens reduces the risk and symptoms of asthma and thereby the incidence of allergy induced asthma. Allergic rhinitis or running nose, when treated, helps in reducing wheezing to a considerable level. Certain medicines are beneficial in treating allergic asthma, allergic rhinitis and non-allergic asthma. Inflammation, in general is kept at bay by corticosteroids.

Nasal sprays, such as corticosteroids help in decreasing swelling due to hay fever. Bronchial tube inflammation is curtailed by the usage of corticosteroids, with the help of inhalers.

Leukotriene modifiers are also used to reduce inflammation. They alleviate asthmatic symptoms and signs of allergic rhinitis and is consumed in the pill form. Certain medications are prescribed for one of the conditions.

Inhalers used as bronchodilators are used for asthmatic intervention, whereas, antihistamines are used for treatment of running nose or allergic rhinitis and not for asthma. An individual with a familial background of allergies is more prone to allergic asthma. Approximately, 78 per cent of asthmatics also suffer from hay fever.

Various forms of asthma include non-allergic asthma, allergic asthma and exercise-induced asthma. Understanding the correlation between the respiratory passages and immune system has led to the enhancement and improvement in the symptoms and conditions of asthma.

All allergies fails to develop into asthma and all asthma is not initiated by allergies.  Not all asthma is triggered by allergies.

Usage of clean and hygienic bedding helps in reducing the incidence of allergy due to dust mite.  Vacuum cleaning is an effective method. Bed sheets are washed in hot water. Antihistamines are taken for hay fever and allergies. Allergy induced asthma should be evaluated by experienced physicians.

Perfumes are better avoided with scented soaps. Asthma inhaler is advised on the first wheezing attack. A scarf over the mouth and nose helps in warming the air. Relevant medications are always kept handy.
