ShouldersShoulders in the human body are very flexible and more so than any other part of our body.
It is sometimes also considered as an unbalanced part because the ball of the upper arms is in fact bigger than the shoulder sockets that hold it. In order for our shoulders to be put in a normal state, they have to be held up by the muscles, ligaments and tendons. Because the shoulder is possibly unstable at times, it’s considered the most common part of the body to get damaged. Different complications may occur in this area and the most common would be tendinitis, dislocations, breaks, separation and sprains.
A few shoulder pains and other problems are created by the following:
Shoulder tendonitisThis can make your shoulder stiff and painful to move. The shoulder normally swells up at the joint.
Arthritis This is normally from the swelling of joints or when the cartilage tears. It also affects the supporting structures in and around the shoulder, like the tendons, ligaments and muscles and not only the joints.
DislocationThis happens by something like a fall where the humerus pops out of the shoulder socket and it has to be put back into place.
This is extremely painful but does not cause long term damage.
OsteoarthritisThis is said to be the most common form of arthritis. It breaks down the cartilage (the greasy tissue that covers and protects the joints). When cartilage is broken it means that the bones rub together which can cause permanent joint damage if not immediately attended to.
SeparationThis happens if the collar bone interacts with the shoulder blade. The ligaments that hold the joints together are torn apart. This is a serious problem that is normally causes by a drastic fall, forceful knock or accident.
FractureThis is when you break or crack the bone.
It normally happens from injuries like accidents, hard falls or sports. All of these injuries are serious and need to be seen to immediately, by a professional in the medical field. The treatment will depend on the severity of the injury, but the RICE method should be performed. RICE – Rest, Ice, Compression and Elevation.
This will help to ease the pain until you can see a doctor. After the injury has healed you might have to have a few sessions with a physiotherapist. They will help your shoulder to function the way it used to. This procedure will take time but it is essential to attend if your doctor advices you to.
