Ankle |
AnkleThe bone of your ankle and the bottom bone of your leg comprise the ankle joint.
This is supported by the ligament, it is what helps you to keep your balance and it joins the bones together. The tendons and muscles are silently told to move from the command of your brain.
An ankle sprain is most common when it comes to a reason for ankle pain as it is just a matter of accidentally twisting your foot wrong or a little fall. The sprain would probably be from a ligament injury.
In order for ankle injuries to heal fully, you are most likely going to have to wait a few months, with lots of resting, constantly take prescribed medication and visit your doctor regularly. You don’t have to fall hard to obtain a broken ankle; it’s just a cracking of the bone that can cause it. Ankle injuries will most likely affect the tendons that are the structures that join the bone to the muscle, as well as the cartilage and this is what causes the joints to soften.
Ankle injuries like these are mostly sport related, but can occur for other reasons too.
These are major injuries and the individual will experience excruciating pain and will not be able to walk, after they have seen the doctor they will probably be given a pair of crutches to help them walk. Having an injury of this kind, or any kind for that matter, should be considered serious and not be ignored under any circumstances.
There is a procedure that is normally followed when ankle injuries occur, this is known as RICE. RICE is short for rest, ice, compression and elevation.
When you seek treatment for your injury, the doctor should know the RICE procedure, but if you are somehow stranded and cannot get to a doctor immediately and there’s someone around to help, tell them of the RICE procedure.
It goes as follows:
RestYou need to rest as much as you can, don’t get up for anything if you can help it. Remain seated with your leg up. This is important because it will keep the injured area rested until you get proper treatment.
IceTake a towel or cloth and put ice into the middle of it, take all four corners into your hands so that the ice inside the cloth forms something like an ice-pack. Gently place the homemade ice-pack onto the infected area for about 20 minutes or until the area is numb.
CompressionWrap the injured area with a bandage. Pull the bandage tight, but only as tight as what you can handle, pull any tighter than that and you are going to cut of the blood circulation of your leg.
ElevationThis is when you position your ankle higher than your waist, so sit down and rest your leg on a cushioned stool or anything else that is higher and put a pillow under your ankle. This will help in reducing the pain.
