Home Remedies for Head Lice
One of the simplest and elementary types of head lice alternative treatment is the mechanical removal of lice and nits.
This method though effectual, may be time-consuming. However the lice eggs will be impossible to remove and hence their mechanical removal is not a practical solution. Besides, mechanical removal of lice and ‘killing’ them is not a pleasant activity! An incidence of lice may be treated by combing every day to remove the live lice. Many home recipes and marketable preparations claim to make good use of essential oils, salts or other such organic substances to effectively remove lice.
However, no study can assert to be a solid proof of the efficacy of these claims.
The enzyme therapy as a probable Head lice alternative treatment has proved to be very effective. The chemical formation of the ‘cement’ that attaches the eggs to the hair strand is yet to be analyzed properly. However, this ‘cement’ is a remarkably stable material that defies the degradation mechanism of myriad anti-lice chemicals.
Quite a few viable products claim to ‘dissolve’ the lice eggs or the ‘cement’ that attaches the eggs to the hair. One of the chemical compounds for lice removal is the vinegar. This should be rubbed directly onto the scalp, kept for an hour or two and then rinsed with water. This will kill all the live lice present in the hair.
Nonetheless, the usefulness or safety of these products is not convincing enough. An old-fashioned style of getting rid of head lice is to shave off the hair completely. With no hair on the scalp, the lice have little cover to ‘hide’ and thus, fall off!
Head Lice Alternative Treatment
Head lice alternative treatment also involves the effective use of heat to eradicate the lice problem. Lice cannot stand a certain level of heat and hence, die on exposure to strong heat currents.
However, care should be taken to see that the scalp is not scalded in the process. The exact opposite of this treatment is the freezing treatment that makes use of ‘cooler’ temperature to kill the head lice. Washing the hair everyday may rinse of the active lice from the hair, but the problem will not be solved completely.
Many antibiotics can be used to kill the head lice.
The backbone of human lice has a specific organ that holds an odd type of bacteria. These bacteria can help the louse in digesting the blood or provide necessary nutrients for the growth of the louse. Some antibiotics may get rid of these bacteria from the gut of the louse. The lice that have ingested the antibiotic-laden blood, will have hampered activities and eventually die. An increasingly popular head lice alternative treatment entails the use of food-grade oils or gels in attempt to suffocate the lice on the scalp.
