Ear Ache Home Remedies

Ear aches are usually thought of as a minor problem, and many people ignore them for weeks and months.

However, the ear is a very delicate organ, and delaying treatment can sometimes have serious consequences. There are some home remedies for ear aches, but you should start trying these promptly, and if there is no relief within a few days, or if the ear ache recurs frequently, you should make an appointment with your doctor.

First of all, you should note that there are two types of ear aches – external and internal, or rather, pain that affects the outer ear, and pain that affects the middle ear.

Infections of the inner ear typically do not cause pain, but lead to other symptoms such as giddiness and nausea. The most common outer ear infection is a fungal infection known as swimmer’s ear. Sometimes bacterial infections can also cause ear aches, as can physical injuries.

Infections of the middle ear usually accompany colds, and the pain is usually the result of a blockage of the Eustachian tube.

Usually, these infections clear up on their own, or with a little bit of basic care and hygiene in the case of a fungal infection. In the meanwhile, simple remedies such as a hot compress or warm oil provide great relief.

You can use a hot water bottle for the hot compress, or else heat a clean, soft hand towel on a griddle for a few minutes, and then fold it and press it against your ear. If the infection is in the middle ear, then putting a few drops of warm baby oil in your ear is a lot more effective. This should however be avoided if you think your eardrum may be ruptured for some reason – for example, if you have suffered a blow to the ear.

For a fungal infection, you can also try swabbing the outer year with a piece of cotton that has been dipped in a solution of vinegar and water.

Very often simple traditional remedies such as yawning or chewing gum also help, if the infection is in the middle ear. This jaw movement helps to unblock the Eustachian tubes, thus relieving the pain.

Some people also find that the pain becomes worse at night – this can be easily remedied by sitting up in bed for a few minutes. This will of course disrupt your sleep, but only for a couple of minutes, far less than the earache itself would.
