HDL or high-density lipoprotein is known as the good cholesterol, and LDL or low-density lipoprotein is called the bad cholesterol. If you are asked to control your cholesterol then it means that you have more of unhealthy fats in your body. It is a metabolic disorder that affects people who's liver and thyroid does not function properly, those who have taken steroid medications, those who eat an unhealthy diet loaded with fats and who do not exercise at all.

The first step to control your cholesterol is to pay attention to what you eat. High cholesterol has become a cause of concern for many people these days. This is because of eating too much of refined processed foods that are rich in fats and sugars.

To control your cholesterol levels you may try the following:

Avoid eating deep fried food that is loaded with fats. Opt for stir fried food or fat free food. Also avoid butter, cheese, high fat milk and curd, sweets, etc.

Use onion and garlic liberally in your daily cooking as they help to break down the fats that cause cholesterol. Garlic is known to decrease the LDL (low-density lipoprotein). People who want to reduce their cholesterol level and keep it in check should try eating seven cloves of garlic daily. You do not need to chew it. Simply swallow it with a glass of water. Or if the odor bothers you, try having a garlic capsule daily. The fresh garlic remedy is however more effective.

Mix a teaspoon of honey to a glass of warm water and drink it every morning. This will help to clean the unhealthy fats from your system.

Eat a healthy breakfast consisting of oatmeal with low fat milk and fresh fruits.

Eat fruits and vegetables that are high in vitamin C as it helps to increase the good cholesterol HDL (high-density lipoprotein) that clears out the bad cholesterol LDL (low-density lipoprotein).

Grapes are also known to reduce cholesterol levels. You could eat a few daily or simply drink grape juice. Eating grapefruit also helps in reducing and controlling cholesterol levels.

Beans contain pectin that helps to lower the cholesterol level. So include all kinds of beans in your diet like soybeans, kidney beans, etc.

Use olive oil and flaxseed oil in your daily diet. You could also use these oils as a salad dressing instead of the rich and fatty mayonnaise dressings.

Flaxseed oil is rich in essential Omega 3 acids, which are good for the body.
