Acid reflux is known as, 'Gastroesophageal Reflux disorder'. The Esophagus and the stomach are important components of the digestive system. Food after consumption and mastication in the mouth passes through the esophagus and into the stomach.

The stomach contains extremely strong and concentrated acids which help in the digestion of food. These acids are known as gastric acids and must essentially be restricted only to the stomach. However, sometimes the barrier between the stomach and the esophagus is damaged which leads to the acid flowing out into the esophagus.

As the acid is flowing out in a reverse direction, it is known as 'Acid Reflux'. It's most common symptom is heartburn. The sudden excessive and uncontrollable surge of a burning sensation in the chest is called heartburn. In addition to this, the inner lining that is the mucosa of the esophagus is also inflamed. This disorder is also called, 'acidity'. The most important cause of acid reflux is faulty eating habits and faulty postures after eating. Water must be consumed only after meals and not during meals. Moreover, after a meal a person should sit or stand erect for at least half an hour. Lying down immediately after consuming food can lead to reflux. One should also avoid caffeine products and alcohol as they promote the secretion of gastric juices, which may contribute to a reflux.

Take a teaspoonful of baking soda in half a glass of water. After about half an hour if symptoms are relieved, take a cup of warm milk. This prevents recurrence of the ailment. Cow's milk should be avoided as far as possible. During meals, you may take five to ten small ginger pieces to which a little salt and lemon juice should be added. A quarter tea-spoon of powdered ginger and half a tea-spoon of carom seeds, to which a little salt has been added, should be taken in warm water. Also, garlic must be consumed as often as possible. Take equal quantities of dry ginger and jaggery and add some sesame oil to it. They must be then ground or powdered together. Dissolve a teaspoonful of this powder in a glass of milk and drink it daily in the morning. In addition to this, one should also have one's meals at a fixed time. You may also drink a glass of hot water, half an hour before breakfast and half an hour before retiring at night. The juice of the bottle gourd if taken daily is also known to have very good effects. While using home remedies, one should be consistent with whichever home remedy one resorts to. At any point of time, if the condition is aggravated, one should immediately show the doctor.
