Remedies for Tinnitus

People with hearing loss experience tinnitus. It usually occurs in older people and gradually becomes chronic with age. The symptoms are ringing, humming, buzzing, and tinkling sounds in either or both ears that affect the hearing.



Sleep gets disturbed due to such sounds. The sounds happen by movement of the jaw or flow of blood in major blood vessels of the head and neck.


 

Remedies for Tinnitus:
Tinnitus cannot be fully cured but certain steps can be taken to relieve it or live with it.
  • Drown the noise of tinnitus with less disturbing sounds. It is the best way of treating this disorder.



    White noise machines that provide a low, constant noise can be effective. Background noise of television or radio can help dull the sound of tinnitus. Hearing aids are also effective in reducing or correcting tinnitus.



    A new device called tinnitus masker worn like a hearing aid emits steady noise of wind in trees or hum of a fan- a sound that becomes familiar and can be ignored easily. Tinnitus is bothersome because of lack of control over the noise, and a masker gives back this sense of control psychologically and hence beneficial.
  • Avoid or reduce the intake of alcohol, caffeine and nicotine. These things restrict blood flow and worsen tinnitus.
  • Lead a stress free life.



    Tinnitus gets aggravated with stress. Stress relief techniques like acupuncture, hypnosis, and yoga can help relax your body
  • Join a self-help group.

 

Causes of Tinnitus:

  • Infections of the middle ear or eardrum.
  • Accumulation of wax in the outer ear.
  • Exposure to loud noises like jet engines, gunshots, industrial machinery, rock music or jackhammers.
  • Tumors of the cranial nerves or blow to the head
  • Alcoholism and excessive intake of aspirin.
     

Prevention of Tinnitus:
The only preventive step to avoid tinnitus is to avoid exposure to loud noises.
Everybody should follow the federal guidelines for noise limits.



Use earplugs whenever required.

Visit an ear specialist if you hear constant ringing or other noises and it is bothersome.
The doctor will examine and detect the cause of tinnitus. If it is due to ear condition, it can be treated with surgery or antibiotics.
