Prostate gland is situated beneath your bladder and surrounds the urethra – the tube which helps excrete urine out of the bladder. Its main function is to produce semen - a milky colored fluid which helps the transport of sperms during ejaculation.

As the prostate gland grows it can cause two major problems – As it surrounds the urethra, it can compress it and partially or completely block the urine flow and it can contract the muscles around the urethra making it difficult to relax and pass urine. BPH may cause no pain at all, but it definitely makes urination a difficult process which can include dribbling, frequent urination especially at night, weak urine stream, urgency to urinate, difficulty to start urination despite of urgency all this can ultimately lead to urinary tract infection and hematuria – blood in urine.

Enlarged prostate treatment most commonly includes surgical procedure to remove a part or whole prostate gland. Other non invasive medications are also an alternative but they need some time to work.

You can try the following enlarged prostate home remedies which can help to improve urination and reduce the symptoms.

Beverages – You should limit your intake of water and any other liquid beverages two to three hours before going to bed or after 6pm in the evening. Always remember to empty your bladder before you sleep at night.

If these two points are kept in mind then you can eliminate much of your problems and symptoms.

Alcohol and caffeine – Besides acting as diuretics alcohol and caffeine in any form tends to tighten the neck of the bladder and thus makes urination more difficult. Also consult a specialist before taking any diuretic medication or antihistamines and decongestants as these will also make the passage of urine harder.

Listen all the calls – Visit the toilet when you first feel like emptying your bladder, long hours of waiting may simply overstretch the bladder muscle causing further damage.

Don't restrict your water intake in the day; drink at least 8-10 glasses of water in a day.

Saw Palmetto – Is considered one of the very effective enlarged prostate natural cures, it helps to reduce nocturnal urination, pain, inflammation, dribbling and retention.

Spices – Although eating spicy foods may have no symptoms for many, eating chilies, spices and acidic foods can irritate the enlarged prostate of many men. So if you are one of those then avoid these foods.

Avoid any kind of stress, remain active and warm – Cold temperatures, stress and inactivity all can cause urine retention and thus increase urgency to urinate. Pain is not a common symptom of enlarged prostate, so if you experience any pain or if your symptoms worsen then consult a specialist to discuss other treatment options.-->Enlarged prostate, clinically also known as benign prostate hyperplasia (BPH) or benign prostate hypertrophy is common as a man ages.
